Juventus Kick Off Serie A Season with Win Over Parma as David Shines

Juventus set out on a third successive campaign with a new permanent manager at the helm, with Igor Tudor looking to bridge the gap to champions Napoli.

The Old Lady were dominant throughout the first half here, but a lack of cutting edge in the final third undermined their attacking endeavours. Debutant Jonathan David was in the thick of the action, but lacked the precision to earn himself a yard of space.

The only strenuous work required of Zion Suzuki in the Parma goal came when he tipped Francisco Conceicao’s header over the bar, with neither side realistically threatening an opener before half-time.

Parma offered very little in an attacking sense before the break, but had the first big chance of the second period when Pontus Almqvist found space on the left and picked out Mateo Pellegrino in the middle, only for his shot to be blocked by Gleison Bremer.

The hosts responded in kind, piling on the pressure with a series of strikes from distance. Federico Gatti and Kenan Yildiz missed the target before Conceicao saw an effort deflected against the post.

Just shy of the hour mark, though, Juve’s pressure eventually told as Yildiz’s cutback was turned home by David to open his account for the Bianconeri.

That marked the first time in four meetings that Juventus had opened the scoring, and only an impressive save from Suzuki to deny Yildiz prevented them from doubling their lead.

Any notion that the hosts would comfortably see out victory looked to have been banished when Andrea Cambiaso was sent off for a petulant swipe at the face of Mathias Lovik.

However, Juve went straight up the other end and put the result beyond doubt, as substitute Dusan Vlahovic turned home from Yildiz’s cutback.

That put the seal on a first victory in three meetings for Juventus, while it condemned Carlos Cuesta to defeat in his first match in charge of Parma. While there were some encouraging signs, it continued an alarming run of form that may not be immediately fixable with Atalanta their next opponent.
