Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has revealed he thought he was going to die after suffering a heart scare during a game.

Szczesny felt pains in his chest during Juventus' Europa League win against Sporting Lisbon in April and had to be substituted in the first half.

The Poland international was left in tears, with his team-mates looking concerned.

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Szczesny described the pain as 'horrible' and added that he felt like his chest was going to explode.

Thankfully Szczesny was able to return to action quickly and he featured prominently for Juventus in the closing stages of the season.

Szczesny told Canal Plus Polonia: 'It was scary. I really thought I was going to die.

'After passing a ball to the defender, I felt like my heart was about to explode.

'During a corner kick, I told [Arkadiusz] Milik I was hurt, but the Sporting players were already taking a corner kick.'

Szczesny says that he is still uncertain about what caused the pain but stated that it was probably due to back or spine problems.

He said: 'The chest pain was horrible.

'To this day, we don't know the reason. Probably back or spine problems.'

Szczesny has made 217 appearances for Juventus since signing for the club in 2017.

He played 181 times for Arsenal and spent two seasons on loan at Roma.
