Juventus 'are on the verge of agreeing a new deal with Paulo Dybala'

Juventus star Paulo Dybala is closing in on a new deal at the club after being named as Serie A's 'MVP' of the season, with the Argentine expected to extend his current contract until 2025.

The forward was one of the standout performers for Maurizio Sarri's side en route to their ninth successive Scudetto success, scoring 11 goals and providing six assists, and now the club are keen to tie him down.

An agreement over fresh terms is expected imminently, according to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, which would come as a massive turnaround in his fortunes at the club after coming close to moving to the Premier League last year.

Dybala was heavily linked with a transfer to Manchester United after falling out of favour in Turin and was rumoured to be heading to Old Trafford before Tottenham agreed a fee with Juventus on Deadline Day.

However, his move to north London broke down after the club were unable to negotiate around the player's image rights and he ended up staying at the Allianz Stadium - getting his head down and producing some of his best football again.

Dybala, who was one of the first high-profile stars to be diagnosed with coronavirus in March, is currently racing to be fit for Juventus' Champions League knockout tie against Lyon after suffering a thigh injury last month.

His new contract could be announced after the Old Lady play the French side, the report adds.

Speaking to CNN in June, the 26-year-old admitted he was close to leaving the club because they 'didn't want to count on me', confirming there was interest from United and Spurs - but said he was eager to stay and prove his worth.

'It was more or less last year at this point when Juventus didn't want to count on me, didn't want me to continue playing here,' he said.

'That's when I was contacted and there were some clubs that were interested in me. Among those were Manchester United and Tottenham. I think for a long time there were conversations, then Paris Saint-Germain also appeared.

'I did not speak directly to any of them, but there were conversations with the clubs. However, my intention at the time was to stay.

'I hadn't had a good year or a positive last six months, so I didn't want to leave with that image because I think I had given the club a lot of nice moments and it wasn't fair that I went like this.

'So I also communicated that my intention was to stay, work to grow and give my best here.'
