Federico Chiesa emerged as a Juventus' hero in defeat but the superstar they signed to avert such woes, Cristiano Ronaldo, was nowhere.
Around the time Massimiliano Allegri guided them to Champions League finals in 2015 and 2017, there would have been a sense of inevitability in any game where Juventus needed a 1-0 home win.
They would approach the task with confidence and efficiency and probably win 1-0.
Andrea Pirlo's Juve needed a 1-0 win to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday but had not won a single game by that margin all season. They ended up going out on away goals to 10-man Porto after a thrilling and unwieldly slugfest.
Porto held first leg advantage
Holding a 2-1 lead from the first leg at Estadio do Dragao, Sergio Conceicao's side lined up with something approaching a back six whenever they were out of possession.
Before the opening half hour was up in Turin, they had managed eight shots and were ahead through Sergio Oliveira's emphatically dispatched spot-kick.
Juve were a rabble. A shadow of the sleek winning machine under Allegri and every inch a team on their way to relinquishing a decade of domestic dominance in Serie A.
In the years since a judiciously run sporting operation decided to go Galactico, the team beaten by Barcelona and Real Madrid in their most recent final appearances have bowed out to Ajax, Lyon and Porto – each time failing to get the job done on home turf in the second leg.
If this is how Andrea Agnelli oversees the rebuild of a great squad, perhaps UEFA should think twice before letting him revamp the entire Champions League.
Of course, it is not all Cristiano Ronaldo's fault. He entered the match with 10 goals in as many Champions League home games for Juventus. Were it not for his stunning hat-trick against Atletico Madrid in 2019, they would have three consecutive last-16 exits to their name.
But in a career full of vintage nights, this was nothing of the sort for the five-time Champions League winner.
Ronaldo failed to touch the ball in the Porto area during the first half, missed a glorious chance to head a decisive goal from one of many sumptuous Juan Cuadrado crosses and turned meekly away as Oliveira's drilled free-kick went through the wall and beyond Wojciech Szezesny.
Adrien Rabiot headed home Federico Bernardeschi's corner to set up a grandstand finish and give Juve a joyless 3-2 win on the night, but Oliveira's unlikely brace proved decisive.
For Ronaldo and Juventus, the dream was over. As Erling Haaland continued his phenomenal goalscoring feats in Borussia Dortmund's similarly unhinged aggregate win over Sevilla and on the eve of Kylian Mbappe probably putting Barcelona and Lionel Messi out of their misery, the era might also be over.
Whoever the leading lights of the next generation prove to be, Federico Chiesa looks worthy of being part of the conversation.
The 23-year-old winger entered this game with two goals and as many assists in his past five outings, including Juve's vital away goal in Porto. He left it having produced a magnificent breakout performance on the biggest stage.
With Ronaldo missing in action, it was Chiesa and Alvaro Morata who took the fight to the visitors, the latter drawing a couple of superb saves from Porto goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin.
Four minutes into the second half, Ronaldo found a touch inside the area and an exquisite one at that. The lay-off was into Chiesa's stride and he opened his body expertly to stroke home.
Then a game that had crackled with low-level excitement exploded into a cacophony of incident and near chaos.
Taremi, such a nuisance to Juve during the first period, became a maddening inconvenience to his own team with two bookings in as many minutes – the second for booting the ball away. Everyone can hear the referee's whistle nowadays, Mehdi.
Chiesa looked to have smuggled his and Juve's second, only for the monumental Pepe to hurl his body towards the ball with all the composure of someone trying to smother a live grenade. It hit the post and went wide.
Juventus's most dangerous attacker got a goal more in keeping with the beauty of his overall performance, arriving late at the back post to head Cuadrado's delicious right-wing cross into the top corner.
Chiesa then skipped effortlessly past Jesus Corona, although Marchesin stood firm to prevent the hat-trick. He was more than worthy of the matchball and the win.
In this muddled present dwarfed by a towering recent past, Chiesa provides measure of comfort and a promise of better days ahead for Juve.
Pirlo appears to have passed up his chance of being a part of those, while the clock is louder than ever before on the great Ronaldo – humbled by his dogged and defiant countrymen.

I am cr7 fan and I honestly admit project cr7 has not been fruitful because of the following:- 1) If Juve really bought him to carry them then I think they should build the team around cr7 like at real Madrid. Not use him like any ordinary player, all the focus of teammates should be him. 2) I don't think Cr7 is finished or slowing, but he is just not the player that use to be few years ago. He should be use as central striker with fewer touches but explosive and clinical finishes. 3) Due to arrival of cr7, Serie a has been under the scope more than ever before so every team in serie a reinforcing their team with better players, such teams are inter and Ac milan. Competition has been stacked high this time. 4)There are many points left but I would rest with this last but least point, Players like Chiesa( particularly) should play for team by creating easy chances for teammates to score header or tap ins. But whenever he dribbled through defenders at the dbox, he is always reluctant to pass to a teammate but he always try to score by himself. I am not saying he shouldn't try to score but not all the time, depends on situation. All these so called football pandits, criticising players are paid. They need all thes to make controversial statement to make articles.

Admit it everyone Ronaldo made Juve an average club.....wait just me hear me out u guys are gonna say all of ronaldo s stats this season and also gonna say that without ronaldo they wouldn't be here in UCL and not even in the top 8 of serie A. But listen if it weren't for signing ronaldo for 115 million Juve would probably have invested better young players....they were such a strong house in UCL until ronaldo came u can't deny that........ once he came the complete tactics and strategies of Juve changed to make ronaldo as a spear head but since he was aging this didn't work....unlike Messi as a core of Barcelona ronaldo as a spearhead won't work ......... there it I'm not saying ronaldo is t great or anything he is one of the best yes......but he really is the reason why Juve are failing in europe

Today It's 10:30# I am tired of CR7 fans. # I firmly believe moving to Juventus from Real Madrid is nothing. # Because Juventus was leading Serie A for a decade. # So, nothing to prove there in Italy. # And I also firmly believe he has destroyed the credibility of Juventus. # Messi moves with his team mates. Whether he wons or loses. # But Cristiano Ronaldo is super selfish. # All he cares about is his own. He only focuses how to increase the goal numbers. Doesn’t matter how!! # He doesn’t believe in team ethics. # He didn’t prove additional in Manchester United. If CR7 wasn’t there, there were plenty of Manchester United stars. That was their Golden Era. # I am not telling CR7 isn’t a legend. Yes he is one of the best Forward, Finisher, Striker. # But believe me it was more fun to watch Ronaldo Nazario to watch. # Messi is fun to watch. # Ronaldinho was fun to watch. # Zinedine Zidane was fun to watch. # But CR7 is materialistic and selfish and boring. # Messi is True GOAT. Accept it or not, its your choice.

what more Ronaldo could have done. There wasn't much ball that was put in the box to target him nor Morata. you could see the frustration of Morata when there is not good delivery or even when him and Ronaldo made breaking run behind Porto high defense in the first half. The problem is not Ronaldo, the problem is Juventus don't have quality players in the midfield nor in their defence to provide quality ball going forward to their strikers. Next thing since Ronaldo moved to Juventus he has been the clubs top goal scorer in 3 consecutive seasons. Again the problem is not Ronaldo Juventus has failed to bring in any world class player to help build the team and someone who can help Ronaldo to perform at his best. Can someone tell me from Juventus signed Ronaldo in 2018, which world class signing they have made to help Ronaldo carry this team? The next thing is Juventus ability to bring in a quality, well experienced manager a manager that knows what it takes to win trophies, a manager that is able to get the most out of his players, a manager that can come up with a game plan that will turn the game around in Juventus favor when they are losing. The three managers that has been at the club since Ronaldo arrival don't possess those types of managerial skills. Pirlo is way too inexperienced to know what to do to win crucial matches like this. You can't rely on Ronaldo only. it takes 11 men and a manager to win a game not 1. Ronaldo just don't have the support to bring Juventus a champions League win nor bring them to a champions League final.
