From Barcelona to River Plate, Sporting to Santos and beyond, several clubs have junior set-ups to boast about, as Goal takes a look over their record
Before Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and the rest of the world's elite players begin winning trophies, they've all got to start somewhere, with all three modern greats coming through some of the game's finest youth academies.
Messi was a product of Barcelona's much vaunted La Masia, Ronaldo came through the Academia Sporting in his native Portugal, and Neymar was fast-tracked to glory through Santos in South America.
But just which clubs can lay claim to having produced the finest number of players in their academy system? Goal takes a look over the record of some of the most respected birthing grounds in the last 30 years of footballing history.
Academia Sporting (Sporting CP)
While Ronaldo remains the obvious star to pick out of the Portuguese side's system, they've produced not only stars for their own national team but internationals for three other countries too, with England among them.
Notable graduates: Cristiano Ronaldo, Eric Dier, Paito, Houssine Kharja, Luis Figo, Ricardo Quaresma, Rui Patricio.
AFC Ajax Youth Academy (Ajax)

Notable graduates: Philipp Lahm, Thomas Muller, Mats Hummels, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Toni Kroos, Emre Can, David Alaba.

Notable graduates: Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba, Danny Welbeck.

Notable graduates: Fernando Cavenaghi, Hernan Crespo, Gonzalo Higuain, Radamel Falcao, Javier Mascherano, Erik Lamela, Santiago Solari.

La masia is the reason behind Barca player success, it is place where're they discovered their talent Players like Messi, Iniesta, Valdes, Puyol, Pique, Busquets, Xavi, Guardiola, Pedro, Jordi Alba, Sergi Roberto Fabregas. In 2010, La Masia became the first youth academy to have trained all three finalists for the Ballon d'Or in a single year - Andrés Iniesta, Lionel Messi and Xavi. Messi also became the first la masia player to win the Balon dor in 2009. La masia philosophy suits Barca, their passing, tatics, the tiki taka style all thanks to Johan cruyff for introducing it, if not him players like Messi wouldn't have succeed...

I will say la masia are the academies that brought players into lime light who thought players like Xavi, Iniesta, Pedro, fabregas, Puyol, Pique and Messi would eventually become stars in football, they brought out the best, am happy Barca have them a chance to play and show what they were made of.

Liverpool's fans should argue that have produced mcmanaman, Robbie fowler, Gerrard, Owen.. They have quite a good academy. Though I am a man utd fan, I do like mcmanaman and Robbie fowler when I started watching epl and I respect that they are a very good club with tradition. As for others, who won trophies by buying, keep buying and win whtever. Look at the list, the famous clubs are those that have academy graduates who grow, develope and played for them.
