Paolo Maldini described the feeling of wearing the captain’s armband for Milan in the Derby della Madonnina.
“I haven’t missed football that much, but I do play every now and then just to keep myself in the loop. It is pleasing to feel the tension before a game,” the legend told Sky Sport Italia.
Alessio Romagnoli is the captain for Milan this evening at a packed San Siro.
“I see wearing the captain’s armband in a derby as the crowning moment of a journey. I always hoped to become what Franco Baresi was to me, a reference point, an extraordinary player who everyone looked to. I was fortunate enough to follow in his footsteps.”

Milan had the best defense ever imo. Maldini, Costacurta, Baresi, Tassotti

Baresi is one of the greatest defenders ever and his knowledge allowed Maldini to become such an incredible player. I know i’m biased but a back 3 of Maldini - Baresi - Nesta would be the best defence you could create.

Weird trying to place Baresi and Maldini in the same bracket. Maldini was a consistent and classy defender. But Baresi was a footballing genius.

The other way around. Maldini was the physical beast, while Baresi was the one good on the ball. Maldini’s technique wasn’t anything special.

Maldini was more than a physical beast, he read the game as well as anyone and was incredible in 1v1s.

Baresi evolved with football and remained a top, top defender as defense tactics completely changed.

His performance in USA 1994 after getting his knee operated on was incredible.

Also, did Maldini really get called up in 2006? If I recall correctly, he had retired after the South Korea game 4 years prior. Cannavaro had been the captain for 4 years with Nesta at his side.

I mean Baresi had his best years 30 years ago, most people have never seen Baresi play, not only on this website

Baresi was probably the better defender, but Maldini was just the complete player

I tried to put together a lineup, but it's an amorphous blob formation. So far I've seen Sheva, Serginho, Eranio, Maldini, Roque Junior, Taibi, Oddo, Costacurta, Baresi, Mussi...

If a player is offside, but on the otherside of the field from a played ball, i dont think he should be called offsides - and that is somewhat the rule we have today.

Maldini just played a beautiful ball to Eranio. Gosh I miss him.

Nowadays even if one defender is behind his team's line, then everyone will be played offside. Shouldn't the same logic be applied to attackers as well? (that even one attacker being offside can play all the other attackers offside as well)

The most terrifying thing about these milan teams is that not only did they have arguably the greatest defense ever, they also had arguably the greatest attacking trio ever along with current day nsm, with van basten, rud, rijkaard.

Maldini on his prime was fairly attacking and just ran the pitch up and down, don't know what you're talking about.

Milan '04 to '06: Maldini - Nesta - Stam - Cafu Bayern München '70 to '74: Breitner - Schwarzenbeck - Beckenbauer - Hansen

Winning a league season by only scoring 36 and only conceding 15 has to be one of the biggest statistical anomalies in football history. Probably the greatest defense ever, at least in terms of being ahead of their peers of the time.

Maldini would only play as a CB today. He'd be utterly ideal as a modern CB.

Bonucci and Chellieni are very good, but they don't compare to that Nesta and Maldini partnership.
