Man City announce they will establish statue for Kompany outside Etihad Stadium

Manchester City have named a road at their training complex after club legend Vincent Kompany and will erect a statue of their former captain outside the Etihad Stadium.

Ahead of the game, City unveiled the 'Vincent Kompany Crescent' at the City Football Academy complex, complete with a mosaic of the Belgian who spent a trophy-filled 11 years at the club.

City also announced plans to commission a statue of Kompany which will stand outside the Etihad Stadium when completed.

As part of the club's recognition of Kompany's contribution to their success over the years, club ambassador Mike Summerbee will present the now-Anderlecht player-manager with his own replica mosaic and lifetime season card on the pitch ahead of this evening's testimonial. His charitable work in Manchester was cited by the club as additional reasons for the lasting tributes.

Speaking at the unveiling of the Vincent Kompany Crescent, Chairman, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, said: “Vincent is a special figure in the history of Manchester City Football Club. He is not only an inspirational and resolute leader on the pitch, but an impeccable and articulate ambassador off it.

"His contribution will be remembered for generations to come, by supporters of our club and the wider football community who rightly recognise Vincent as one of the iconic Premier League figures of his generation.

On the recognition, Kompany said: “It is an incredible honour to be recognised by this special Club in this way.

“The journey that we went on together throughout my 11-years in Manchester changed my life and I am delighted to have played my small part in altering the course of this Club's history during that time.

“To establish a permanent, physical connection with a place that will forever mean so much to me is truly humbling and I will always be grateful to Sheikh Mansour, Khaldoon Al Mubarak and all those associated with City for their unwavering support and kindness.”
