Milan paid the price for insipid finishing and sluggish defending, as Parma inflicted their first Serie A defeat since the opening weekend, leaving them 10 points behind Inter.
Match Report
Mariano Troilo headed in late on as Parma claimed a 1-0 win over AC Milan, who saw their Serie A title hopes take another hit at San Siro.
Milan were on a 24-game unbeaten streak in the top flight heading into Sunday's clash, but with their first loss since the opening weekend, they remain 10 points behind the leaders.
Mateo Pellegrino volleyed narrowly wide in the opening two minutes, but Milan were on top from there without creating too many clear-cut opportunities.
Christian Pulisic sent a powerful, tight-angled shot straight at Edoardo Corvi before lifting another effort just over the bar shortly before the break.
Pulisic also saw a low drive cleared off the line by Troilo on the other side of half-time.
Rafael Leao rattled the frame of the goal with a fine volley after meeting Adrien Rabiot's cross, but Parma continued to stand firm.
And that paid off as, in the 80th minute, Troilo rose above his defender to head Emanuele Valeri's corner into the far post. It was originally disallowed for a foul on Mike Maignan, but the decision was overturned following a VAR review, as Lautaro Valenti was deemed not to be impeding the goalkeeper.
Data Debrief: Milan's hopes fading away
Massimiliano Allegri said pre-match that Milan could not afford any slip-ups in their hunt for the Scudetto, but that is exactly what happened.
It is just their second loss of the league season, with their second-longest unbeaten streak in a single Serie A season coming to an end.
Milan had their chances, recording 25 shots worth 1.33 a combined expected goals (xG), with Pulisic, Leao, Rabiot and Ardon Jashari all having four attempts each, but none of them could convert.
Parma, meanwhile, had nine attempts worth 0.46 xG, with Troilo converting their last shot of the game, and it truly is now Inter's title to lose.
