Chelsea's N'Golo Kante and Kai Havertz were dealt harsh hands by the famed L'Equipe player ratings after their loss to Real Madrid - while Toni Kroos only managed a 3/10 despite ending up on the winning side.

Chelsea were 3-1 down going into the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final but came storming back with goals from Mason Mount, Antonio Rudiger and Timo Werner putting them 10 minutes away from the last four.

But a superb volley from Madrid substitute Rodrygo sent the game to extra-time and captain Karim Benzema - who was Madrid's most highly-rated player with 7/10 - headed the crucial goal to send the 13-time European champions through.

Yet among the Chelsea starting XI, the ratings from the French sports publication ranged from 4-8, with centre back Antonio Rudiger voted the best player on the pitch with an 8/10 performance which included a excellent headed goal and inspiring display from the back.

Behind him, Edouard Mendy could only score 5/10 as could left back Marcos Alonso, while Reece James on the opposite flank impressed and earned a 7/10 rating.

Yet it's up the field where some Chelsea stars did not perform, with captain on the night Kante registering just a 4/10 - as did Kai Havertz who led the line and scored in the first-leg last week.

Mason Mount - who got the ball rolling by sweeping in Chelsea's first of the night after 15 minutes - rated the most highly out of the midfield and attack, scoring 7/10.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek was a surprise inclusion in the starting XI on the right and he earned a 6/10, as did former Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic and Timo Werner, who scored Chelsea's third of the night.

Having made a number of bold changes ahead of a second-leg where the defending European champions had to go all-out attack, manager Thomas Tuchel received a 7/10 rating.

Meanwhile on the opposite side, a number of Real Madrid players were rated lowly given they let a healthy first-leg lead slip - before eventually sneaking through.

Toni Kroos with 3/10 received a rating half that of midfield partner Luka Modric who set up Rodrygo's goal, with the other midfielder in that trio Casemiro receiving a standard 5/10.

In the back-line, right back Dani Carvajal and centre back Nacho only managed 4/10s, with David Alaba up to six and Ferland Mendy a 5/10.

Ex-Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois - despite conceding three goals - managed a 6/10.

Further up the field, Vinicius Jr and Fede Valverde could only score 5/10s and despite a rare 90 minutes without a goal, Benzema's winner in extra-time saw his score leap up to 7/10.

A dramatic night at the Bernabeu resulted in Madrid progressing to the semis, where they will face either city rivals Atletico Madrid or Manchester City.

City are 1-0 up going into tonight's second-leg at the Wanda Metropolitano.
