TMW says Newcastle are in the market for a new midfield addition and an approach to Roma for Kone has already been made.
However, the Giallorossi have rebuffed the initial enquiry, insisting Kone won't move in January.
Roma, now sitting top of the Serie A table, hold no interest in losing Kone midway through their title push.
Management rate the youngster as a key member of coach Gian Piero Gasperini's first-choice XI. Indeed, new contract talks haven't been ruled out to satisfy Kone.
The midfielder currently is on a deal worth €2.8m-a-year.
