Croatian international and Rennes midfielder Lovro Majer (25) is expected to leave Stade Rennais this summer with a handful of European sides showing interest in his signing. Newcastle United are among them, according to a report from Foot Mercato.
Majer arrived in Rennes two years ago. He quickly established himself as one of the league’s finest attacking midfielders, so much so that Atletico Madrid targeted him with insistence last summer. Rennes held on and even extended Majer’s contract until 2027.
However, after the 2022 World Cup in which he finished third with Croatia, Majer’s form has dipped. He’s no longer a starter in Bruno Genesio’s side, whilst his output has also dropped. He has only scored two goals and registered four assists in 37 games played with Rennes, who are sixth in the Ligue 1 standings and it will be very difficult for them to keep hold of Majer should the club fail to qualify for European competition next season.
The outlet reports that Newcastle United, who look set to play Champions League football next season, have sought to obtain information on Majer. According to Foot Mercato, Rennes will be prepared to let go of the Croatian in exchange for a €40m transfer fee.
