OFFICIAL: Atletico Madrid sign Matt Doherty from Tottenham on a free transfer

Atletico Madrid have signed Republic of Ireland right-back Matt Doherty, 31, on a free transfer from Tottenham.

Doherty has joined the Spanish giants on a short term contract until the end of the season.

It was expected to be a loan move but Spurs announced his deal with the club has been mutually terminated.

'We have mutually agreed to the termination of Matt Doherty’s contract to enable him to join another club,' a Tottenham statement read.

'Signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August, 2020, the Republic of Ireland international made 71 appearances for us in all competitions, scoring three goals.

'We should like to thank Matt for his service and wish him well for the future.'
