OFFICIAL: Italy coach Gattuso steps down, finished with 6 Wins and 2 Losses

Official announcement confirms that Gennaro Gattuso has stepped down as head coach of the Italy national football team. Prior to this, Italian Football Federation (FIGC) President Gabriele Gravina and Italy national team team manager Gianluigi Buffon have already announced their resignations one after another.

 

Official Statement from the Italian Football Federation

The Italian Football Federation and Gennaro Gattuso have reached a mutual agreement to terminate the contract of the Calabria-born coach as head coach of the Italy national team. The federation expresses its gratitude to Gattuso and his coaching staff for the dedication, commitment and passion they have shown over the past nine months, and wishes them greater success in their future careers.

Gattuso stated: "It is with a heavy heart that I believe my tenure with the national team has come to an end, as we failed to achieve the goals we set. The Azzurri jersey is the most precious treasure in world football, and therefore, to facilitate future technical evaluations, leaving at this moment is the right decision. I would like to thank President Gabriele Gravina, Gianluigi Buffon, and all my colleagues at the federation for their constant trust and support. It has been an honor to coach the national team and lead these young men who have shown fighting spirit and love for the jersey. But my greatest thanks go to the fans, to all the Italian people who have never wavered in their love and support for the national team over these months. Forza Azzurri forever."

 

Gattuso took charge of the Italy national team in June 2025, compiling a record of 6 wins and 2 losses. Italy finished second in Group I of the European World Cup qualifiers behind Norway, forcing them to enter the play-offs.

 

Italy defeated Northern Ireland in the play-off semi-finals but lost to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the final, missing out on the World Cup for the third consecutive time.
