Julen Lopetegui on Thursday held a face-to-face meeting with Howard Webb at Wolves' training ground to discuss the refereeing decisions the club have suffered in their last two games.

At Liverpool last Saturday, Toti Gomes thought he had scored a late winner for Wolves in the FA Cup third-round tie, only for it to be disallowed and VAR incorrectly to uphold the decision.

Then in the closing stages of Wednesday's Carabao Cup tie at Nottingham Forest, Matheus Nunes was denied a penalty despite appearing to be clipped by Serge Aurier.

Referees' chief Webb was due to meet all managers in the weeks ahead but Sportsmail understands the meeting was brought forward in the light of recent events.

The meeting, thought to have lasted about 90 minutes, is understood to have been positive, with Lopetegui able to explain in detail where he believes Wolves have had rough treatment.

After his side were knocked out on penalties at Forest, Lopetegui said: 'It was a very clear penalty on Matheus – very clear, but the referee is the only one with the power so we have to accept it.

'If you see the replays, it's impossible to think anything else, but the VAR was not in use today and that was a pity for us.

'I want only that the decisions are not against us, I have to think we are unlucky but it will balance in the rest of the season because I can't think anything else.'

The finale of the matched was marred by a brawl involving players and staff from both sides. The FA are examining the incidents and charges appear inevitable.

Forest forward Morgan Gibbs-White, who joined the club from Wolves last summer, incensed his former team-mates by celebrating provocatively in front of the visiting fans when Dean Henderson saved from Joe Hodge to seal the home side's passage to the last four.
