Paris Saint Germain's exit from the Champions League is likely to precipitate the departure of coach Christophe Galtier and sporting director Luis Campos.
Club insiders believe both figures will bear the brunt for PSG's meek display against Bayern Munich as the inquest rages into how a team packed with superstars once again failed to progress in the knockout stages of the competition.
Such is the divisive atmosphere in the PSG squad, questions were raised by their own players in the dressing room during the aftermath last night over the underwhelming standard of the substitutions Galtier made.
As Bayern introduced Joao Cancelo, Sadie Mane, Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry to kill off the tie, Galtier could only counter with Nordi Mukiele, teenager El Chadaille Bitshiabu, Juan Bernat and striker Hugo Ekitike who has yet to gain the coach's trust.
'Bayern were a team built to win the Champions League,' said Kylian Mbappe. 'At the start of the season I said we would do the maximum we could do. This is the maximum we could do.'
David Ginola said he was 'disgusted', Jamie Carragher said he was 'delighted' and Thierry Henry questioned the club's identity as they surrendered 3-0 on aggregate to Bayern. The project is not working with Galtier the first PSG coach since 2005 not to reach a quarter final in any competition.
The fact the Qataris are ogling Manchester United after flirting with Liverpool and Tottenham suggests the Paris St Germain project has lost its lustre for the owners. The French league lacks true competition and, despite their millions in investment, they have not been able to compete with their European peers.
Assembling Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar, arguably the best attacking line up in world football, seemed the dream ticket but the reality is their lack of defensive nous means PSG are reduced to a predictable counter-attacking team. The emphasis is on the rest of the side to do the hard work and give their stellar forwards the platform to shine.
French paper L'Equipe gave Mbappe and Messi a measly three marks each in their post-match ratings.
L'Equipe has been long accused of holding an agenda against Messi. For their part, the paper counters that they represent the view of the true Paris fans. For many older PSG supporters these stars, this squad, this ethos does not represent the club they used to believe in. They want a club built on young, hungry French stars of the future.
'What is the plan?' Thierry Henry asked on CBS. 'What is the philosophy? There is a fracture between the club and many of the fans.'
'There is a clear lack of commitment and investment by the players. There has been a problem for years,' said Ginola. 'Individual talents alone are not enough to win.'
Talks are underway with Messi to renew his contract. His representatives say the World Cup winner has only held talks with PSG, nothing has taken place with Barcelona or Inter Miami, and he remains ambitious to play for a team in Europe that is competitive enough to challenge for the Champions League.
Initial indications were that PSG remain ambitious but the reality that dawns across Paris today is that they may end the summer with only one of their famous front three intact.
Mbappe for all his influence and power is being urged to test himself at Real Madrid while the English Premier League challenge is being pushed upon Neymar as the one competition he needs to play in to prove himself a true great of the game.
The idea may not be so fanciful if the Qataris' pursuit of Manchester United proves successful but Erik ten Hag and counterparts will certainly be wary of inheriting PSG's problems.
For their part, PSG need to resolve their identity crisis before they can move forward.
Riding the wave of an impressive World Cup victory, Messi still has enough kudos and gravitas to help but without a new, structured plan they may struggle to convince even him to stay. Then what chance do they have yo entice the best young French talents to sign ahead of their rivals?
As Henry underlined: 'What are you trying to achieve? I don't think the fans can relate to this team.'
Changes are expected to follow imminently.

Mbappe and Messi looks likely the one to leave PSG .. I think Neymar won't be sold.. because he is injured for a few months, plus no clubs really interested in him..so he will stay put.. Messi maybe he will go back to Barca or join pep at city,or last choice is try his luck at MLS.. while Mbappe maybe he will join Madrid..

It's sad but it was very predictable to look into de crystal ball of the inability of PSG qualifying for the next stage....It was soo daring! A clear picture signifying dat monies can't buy happiness...It takes a total dedication, resilience, hunger & above all purpose to achieve wat clubs lyk Madrid, Barca, Milan, etc have secured in europe.

They should have assigned Sergio Ramos as a striker instead. He was the only serious player yesterday. Or should I say he's the only player that still has the spirit of playing champions league in him.

Messi leaving for Rosario and Mbappe for Madrid
Messi kind of completed the football and will be the goat no matter when he decides to retire.Promoting where he came from is a good choice and Mbappe needs to join Real to tap into his real potential.

They should leave King Mbappe to do it all by himself. Neymar is becoming a scapegoat.
The French media have no one to blame since he was injured.
