Palermo forward Mario Santana suffered an ugly injury against Acireal and will be out for the rest of the season.

The former Fiorentina and Napoli player had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher during the 3-1 loss to third-placed Acireale. It has been reported by Goal Italia that the veteran has ruptured a tendon in his right Achilles.

This means that the season will be over for the 37-year-old, who will leave Palermo coach Rosario Pergolizzi with a headache in attack.

The Rosanero are top in Group I of Serie D with a gap of five points down to Savoia on second. But, they aren't blessed with too many options in the attacking positions, and will now struggle to replace the experienced attacker.

Santana has played 12 games so far this season and scored three times and made two assists since his return to Palermo last summer.
