In an interview with today's edition of La Repubblica, Fiorentina coach Stefano Pioli also addressed the issues surrounding the national team following the departure of previous coach Luciano Spalletti, with his name also being mentioned as a replacement.

Pioli said: "Gattuso is the right man. Was I also linked? I was pleased, but right now it's not what I want. I love the routine of club football. I thought Ranieri would accept, to end a wonderful career."

Pioli also discussed many individual aspects of his new Fiorentina: "I thank Commisso for retaining strong players and key figures like Kean, De Gea, Gudmundsson, Fagioli, and Gosens. They're the cornerstone of the project for the next two years.

Kean? I wanted him at Milan, even though some people spoke badly of him. None of that was true, a serious guy who gives his all. And he's a friend of Leao; they're both big-hearted. Dzeko? A professor on the pitch. Off the pitch, an example for the younger players.

The attacking midfield? It will depend on the other eight, the opponent, and the match.

The transfer market? I expect a couple of signings; the club knows what's needed. I like Commisso; he's straightforward and direct."

And further objectives are being set ("The Champions League must be our goal" and "I know Fiorentina hasn't won since 2001; it's a responsibility and a motivation").

To whom would you dedicate the trophy? Pioli explains: "To Davide Astori, my captain. I feel his presence even more here, I can't imagine what effect he would have on me."
