A  Scudetto winner with AC Milan, Pioli has taken charge of Fiorentina after leaving Al-Nassr over the summer.

At his Europa Conference League playoff preview today, Pioli said:  "I thank (owner Rocco) Commisso for retaining strong players and individuals of substance like (Moise) Kean, (David) De Gea, (Albert) Gudmundsson, (Nicolo) Fagioli, and (Robin) Gosens. They are the basis of the project for the next two years.

"Kean? I wanted him at Milan, even though some spoke badly of him. None of that was true, a serious guy who gives his all. And he's a friend of (Rafael) Leao, both of them with big hearts.

"(Edin) Dzeko? A professor on the pitch. Off the pitch, an example for the younger players. Trident? It will depend on the other eight, the opponent, and the match.

"Transfer market? I expect a couple of signings, the club knows what's needed. I like Commisso, he's frank and direct."

Pioli also discussed season targets ("The Champions League must be our goal" and "I know full well that Fiorentina hasn't won since 2001, it's a responsibility and a motivation").

To whom would you dedicate the trophy? Pioli added: "To Davide Astori, my captain. I feel his presence even more here, I can't imagine what effect he would have on me."

Why Ronaldo one of only a few champions

Meanwhile, Pioli also reflected on working with Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr.

He said: "Only by working with him do you get a sense of how immense he is, a force that changes everything around him. Coaching him is easy; you never have to remind him of anything.

"At 40, he has to manage himself; he knows exactly what he can and can't do. I saw his obsession in (Miroslav) Klose at Lazio and in (Zlatan) Ibrahimovic at Milan. He loves arriving at the pitch at 7 a.m. and leaving at 6 p.m. Even a family outing has to be calculated based on rest hours or nutrition. That's why only a few become champions."
