Ralf Rangnick is reportedly willing to take a backseat if he joins AC Milan as he wants them to appoint Julian Nagelsmann as manager.
Rangnick had been expected to take the reigns at the Serie A side with complete control over decisions and transfers in what would be a restructure of the club.
But Gazzetta dello Sport claim Rangnick is not planning to coach Milan and instead wants Red Bull Leipzig manager Nagelsmann to be given the job.
The 32-year-old joined Leipzig last summer after Rangnick left the club and he has guided them to third place in the Bundesliga and the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
They are also still in with a chance of challenging Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund for the title.
Stefano Pioli is currently in charge at the San Siro but a run of poor form saw Milan fall out of the Europa League places before football was suspended in March.
Rangnick confirmed he had been approached by the Italian club in an interview with German publication Mitteldeutsche Zeitung earlier this month.
He said: 'There was an approach from Milan, but with the coronavirus outbreak, there were other things to consider.
'I am not interested in the financial aspects. For me, it's that I need to have a certain influence, which is not the same as power, although in some situations you need power to get things moving.'
These comments drew criticism from technical director and former player Paolo Maldini who claimed the coach needed to 'review the general concepts of respect'.
Rangnick is reportedly set for talks with chief executive Gordon Singer next week but there are thought to be potential issues over how much Milan will have to spend on transfers when football is able to resume.
