Report: Italy left Chiellini out in error?

RAI Sport claim Giorgio Chiellini was left off the Italy starting XI by mistake in tonight’s Nations League match with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Everyone had expected Chiellini to make his comeback over a year since his last call-up, having recovered from a serious knee injury.

When the starting XI was released, it had Francesco Acerbi starting alongside Leonardo Bonucci instead.

According to RAI Sport, who have a pitch-side reporter covering the game, this was a mistake and the Italy camp spent quite a few minutes trying to convince UEFA to change it.

However, the only way that could be allowed was if Acerbi was injured and therefore sent to the stands rather than the bench.

Roberto Mancini decided that was not worth it and therefore stuck with Acerbi in the line-up, Chiellini on the bench.
