Roma 'are trying everything to sign Cristiano Ronaldo in a shocking move from Manchester United'

Serie A giants Roma are reportedly 'trying everything' they can to complete a stunning move for Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Italian outlet Retesport claim that former Roma defender Fabio Petruzzi has told them that he has information from his old club that they are in pursuit of the Portuguese superstar.

If the shocking move were to happen, it would see Ronaldo reunite with former Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho isn't the only Portuguese connection within the club, as director Tiago Pinto is in charge of transfers.

Ronaldo was only recently linked to Bayern Munich who ruled out the signing of the 37-year-old.

It comes after reports that Ronaldo is 'ready to quit' Old Trafford this summer over their lack of transfer activity.

The Portuguese veteran, 37, has a year left on his contract and both he and new manager Erik ten Hag, who replaced interim boss Ralf Rangnick in April, have spoken with excitement of another season after the Dutchman implements a squad rebuild.

But despite interest in Darwin Nunez, who has joined Liverpool, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong and Ajax winger Antony, the club are still yet to make a single signing.

According to Portuguese outlet Record, Ronaldo issued the club an ultimatum - 'up your game or I'll leave'.

Ronaldo is said to have informed his inner circle that a continued lack of transfers would see him start looking for another club.

He had previously told the United website: 'What I know about (ten Hag) is he did a fantastic job for Ajax, that he's an experienced coach. But we need to give him time.

'Things need to change the way he wants. I hope we have success, of course, because, if you have success, all of Manchester is going to have success as well. I wish him the best.'

Despite Roma's interest in Ronaldo, the Portuguese star's relationship with Mourinho at the Santiago Bernabeu wasn't the smoothest.

When Mourinho adopted a defensive gameplan during a 1-0 defeat to Barcelona in the Copa Del Ray in 2010, Ronaldo said he didn't like the the kind of football Real played.

As per Sky Sports, when asked whether he liked the way they played he responded: 'No, I don't but I have to adapt to what is asked of me. This is the way it is. We have a strategy.'

After scoring in their first league win of 2012/13 at the third attempt against Granada, Ronaldo did not celebrate and described the squad's mood as 'sad'.

Mourinho and Ronaldo clashed after a 2-0 Copa del Rey win against Valencia in mid-January, when the manager had expressed his anger at the player not tracking back.

When Mourinho was asked about Ronaldo when his second spell at Chelsea was announced, he said: 'The relationship does not exist. He plays for Real Madrid and I'm at Chelsea. You would not find us hanging around together.

"I remember the good and the not so good. I remember he is a goal machine, he helped me to become a champion, to win the cup and the Super Cup.

"He probably also helped him and each of us to make history in winning the league with 100 points against the best Barcelona side in history.'
