Chievo goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino thanked Cristiano Ronaldo for his message of support after fracturing his nose in a collision with the Juventus star on Serie A's opening day.

The 39-year-old stopper was left unconscious after making contact with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner as they both went for a loose ball.

He was taken to hospital following the clash having suffered a fractured nose, whiplash and bruised shoulder.

Sorrentino wrote via Twitter: 'I received a message of closeness and prompt recovery from Cristiano Ronaldo. Thank you Legend!'

After the incident that left Sorrentino prone, play continued and striker Mario Mandzukic eventually turned the ball home following the scramble.

However, VAR ruled out the strike after it was revealed that the former Real Madrid ace had handled the ball in the build up.

Following his £100million move to Turin this summer, Ronaldo was hungry to break his duck in a competitive match, having scored eight minutes into a pre-season friendly against Juventus' youth side.

Sorrentino - who rejoined Chievo from Palermo in 2016 - was forced to leave the field  and was replaced by Andrea Seculin before being taken to hospital.

He spent the night in hospital and after returning home posted a picture of himself on Instagram donning a neck brace with his nose bandaged up.

The extent of his injuries include a fractured nose, whiplash and a bruised shoulder.

After leading 2-1 for 75 minutes, Chievo eventually lost 3-2 following an own goal from defender Mattia Bani and a last-gasp injury-time winner from Federico Bernardeschi.
