Trent Alexander-Arnold has revealed his anguish in a tweet breaking his silence after injury ruled him out of England duty at Euro 2020.
The Liverpool star was named in his country's 26-man squad, which begins on Friday June 11, but will miss the entire tournament due to a thigh problem picked up in a warm-up game against Austria on Wednesday.
And the Reds right-back declared his heartbreak on his social media in his first tweet since the match and being ruled out of the competition, echoing the disappointed reaction of the nation.
He posted a picture of himself trudging off the pitch at the Riverside to his 1.7million on Twitter with the simple caption: 'Absolutely gutted.'
England team-mate Marcus Rashford, who plays for Liverpool's rivals Manchester United, responded with a heart emoji.
The 22-year-old was consoled on the pitch by team-mate Conor Coady, who potentially recognised the severity and gravity of the injury, which will keep him out for between four to six weeks.
He also had the ignimony of receiving a yellow card by referee Lawrence Visser for returning to the pitch without official permission - given that all five substitutes had been made in the friendly - even though he only returned for a few seconds.
The news will see Alexander-Arnold leave the England camp in the coming days and will focus on recovering from his injury in time for the new domestic campaign in August.
Match of the Day host and former England striker Gary Lineker took to Twitter to bemoan the Three Lions' loss of 'the best attacking right back in world football'.
What a blow for @TrentAA and @England,' he wrote. 'Losing the best attacking right back in World football is such a shame.'
Team-mate Bukayo Saka added after the match: 'It's devastating, he has worked hard to earn his spot, it's a shame. We hope it's not too serious.'
Fans also voiced their support on social media in their droves, devastated at the loss of the right back just days before England's opening game against Croatia.
'Trent Alexander-Arnold out of the Euros through injury,' one fan wrote. 'How on Earth are we going to win it now?'
Another supporter said: 'Trent Alexander-Arnold's out of the Euros then. I've got a bad feeling about our squad now.'
England boss Gareth Southgate is expected to call up an extra man to take the right-back's spot in his 26-man squad, with Jesse Lingard, James Ward-Prowse, Ben White and Ben Godfrey the favourites to be called up among the back-ups.
