Whilst many had thought Newcastle United's post-January boost in form had been enough to steer the Magpies clear of the Premier League relegation zone, a thumping 5-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur proved to be a reality check for Eddie Howe and his team.

Match Reports
Newcastle were tipped to take something away from a match against Antonio Conte's charges, who have been awfully inconsistent since the Italian took charge.
However, when Spurs are at their best under the Italian, they can appear unplayable and their second-half display on Sunday afternoon was something excellent to behold.
Newcastle took the lead through Fabian Schar in the 39th minute, with the Swiss defender firing in a free-kick which beat Hugo Lloris at his right-hand post, although a VAR check for handball found no infringement.
Tottenham's comeback
Spurs were able to hit back almost immediately with Son Heung-min playing a fine pass towards Ben Davies, who outjumped his defender and fired a header into the net from close range.
It's unclear just what happened at half time, yet Newcastle emerged from the break and just collapsed, conceding the first of four further goals in the 48th minute.
Matt Doherty had the ball inside the penalty area and curled a shot into the left side of the net, whilst Son added to the lead with a sumptuous volley into the net.
Emerson Royal then got in on the act after the hour, latching onto a cross from Doherty and sending a quick shot which went into the net via the post.
It was 5-1 in the 83rd minute when Steven Bergwijn scored with a low shot from inside the penalty area, bringing to an end Newcastle's humiliating afternoon.
