UEFA council member: Inter & Juventus’ UEFA matches cannot be postponed

FIFA and UEFA council member Evelina Christillin has confirmed that UEFA competition matches cannot be postponed in wake of the outbreak of Coronavirus.

Coronavirus has now reached Italy and its presence has cast several doubts over many upcoming events. Four Serie A matches, including Inter versus Sampdoria, were postponed over the weekend whilst Venice's famous carnival has also been cut short. Several towns across the country have also been placed in lock down.

Inter are due to play host to Ludogorets in the Europa League round of 32 on Thursday night at San Siro but it remains unclear as to whether fans will be allowed to attend or not, one thing for sure though is the game will go ahead as planned.

Inter's match away to Juventus is also at risk of being played behind closed doors too due to the virus being present in the Piedmont region too.

In an interview with Italian newspaper La Domenica Sportiva, Christillin said: “I have talked for a long time with UEFA and they do not want to take medical, legal and political responsibility for the matches.

“In addition to Inter there is also the issue of Juventus's trip to Lyon. What is certain is that you cannot postpone these games.

“The idea of playing behind closed doors is there. I do not think it is possible for there to be many postponements due to the fact there are the European Championship's this Summer.”
