Vanoli: I'm not scared of Fiorentina challenge

Having succeeded Stefano Pioli as Viola coach, Vanoli addressed the local press several days after their 2-2 draw with Genoa on Sunday.

He began: "Why this challenge? Because I know what Florence is and I know the club has shown great growth. These challenges motivate me, give me energy, but above all, they don't scare me.

"I know the road will be long and difficult and that's why we'll have to be clear-headed. Getting out of this situation will take time, sacrifice, and work. Let's leave the January transfer window aside.

"I've heard a lot about the summer preparations: I don't want to compare myself to someone who has done things for the good of Fiorentina here (Pioli). It wouldn't be right to talk about that or the transfer window.

"Let's focus on the next match, which will be important and difficult for us."

Vanoli added, "I don't know if it's luck or bad luck to experience these situations. Today, we have to be the ones to win back our fans by showing them sacrifice, desire, and determination on the pitch.

"In these situations, we have to take responsibility: we ended up in this situation, and we have to get out of it.

"I tell the players: that's the pitch, now it's up to you. It's not the good ones who play with me, but the ones who deliver results. It has to be a step that he has to take, but everyone has to take.

"The mentality starts from the head, not the feet. I told the players I'd like to be in their place... when I see the team decline in the 60th minute, with five substitutions, I lose my nerve. Whoever comes in has to raise the bar."
