WAGS of Argentina's World Cup heroes kiss the trophy and take on-pitch selfies

The wives and girlfriends of Argentina's victorious footballers rushed onto the Qatari pitch on Sunday night to congratulate their World Cup heroes.

But in the French camp, the mood was very different, with the dejected French player leaving the field as soon as they could, leaving their partners to pick up the pieces of their broken dreams of winning back-to-back trophies.

Argentina emerged from Doha having won the FIFA World Cup trophy in a spectacular game of football that saw them expertly beat France 4-2 on penalties.

Twice France came from behind, with superstar Kylian Mbappe scoring a hattrick to end the match in a 3-3 draw. But it was only penalty heartbreak to come.

Minutes later, just as star player Lionel Messi kissed the coveted golden trophy, he also landed a smooch from his his most loyal fan, wife Antonela Roccuzzo.

Having rushed onto the field, the Argentine WAGS were seen taking selfies, cheering and re-uniting with their partners on the pitch to share the moment of glory.

Roccuzzo herself was seen grasping the coveted trophy with both hands, kissing it with her eyes closed, as the realisation of her husband achieving his life-long dream sunk in.

Argentina's Angel Di Maria, who like Messi fell at the final hurdle in 2014 against Germany, shared a passionate kiss with his wife Jorgelina Cardoso after the  2022 trophy ceremony. Like Messi, he was also seen celebrating with his children.

Meanwhile, for the French side, it was a crushing defeat at the final stage of the competition that even saw President Emmanuel Macron comforting his wife Brigitte Macron.
