What next for Tottenham and Postecoglou after Europa League triumph?

The morning after the night before and Tottenham Hotspur head coach, Ange Postecoglou, will undoubtedly still be basking in the glory that ending a 17-year trophy wait will bring.

Although the Europa League final between Spurs and Manchester United was far from being the best advert for Premier League football, Wednesday night's match was just about getting the job done and looking forward to Champions League football next season as an added bonus.

The Red Devils certainly turned up in every aspect bar scoring a goal so there will be positives for Ruben Amorim to take away from another disappointing night for United.

When the dust settles, the numbers won't lie.

More possession (73.4% to 26.6%), more passes (514 to 183), more chances created (four to one), more shots at goal (16 to three)... the reality is that Amorim's men couldn't really have done too much more, and but for a wonder save from Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario to keep out Luke Shaw late on, United could've forced extra-time at least.

Postecoglou replacement already being lined up?

Postecoglou, on the other hand, will feel some justification in his methods, and though he and Tottenham will rightly be celebrating now, once a forensic review of the final is undertaken, it could lead the Spurs hierarchy to the untimely conclusion that the Australian has taken the squad as far as it can go.

Former managing director of the North London club, Fabio Paratici, has, apparently, already been getting in chairman Daniel Levy's ear about hiring ex-Ajax boss, Francesco Farioli.

The 36-year-old's style of football at the Dutch giants earned him the plaudits this season, but despite having a nine-point lead in the Eredivisie with less than a month of the season to play, Ajax somehow lost out on the title to PSV Eindhoven.

If Tottenham genuinely believe that Postecoglou is no longer the answer, then is bringing a manager with little experience and who buckles under pressure really the right move - particularly at this point in time?

Injuries a key factor in Spurs' poor league form

Furthermore, there has to be an acknowledgement of the set of circumstances that befell the Australian during parts of the 2024/25 campaign.

At one point, Spurs had 11 senior players out injured, many of whom - Micky van de Ven, James Maddison et al - would be considered definite starters.

Having to start games against established Premier League squads with inexperienced youngsters such as Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray was always going to have a knock-on effect and yet Postecoglou has always seemingly been keen not to use that as an excuse.

He has never hidden when it comes to having to answer the difficult questions regarding his own position as the slide down the English top-flight continued, and he fronted up again after the final.

Postecoglou wants Europa League victory to be platform for more success

"I still feel there's a lot of work to be done and I think that's quite obvious - but not as much work as people may think," he told reporters.

"People can bang on about our 20 league defeats and where we are but they're missing the point of what we're trying to build here or what I'm trying to do anyway and I really feel that tonight can be a great platform for us to keep on.

"I understand why it would be difficult for a club like this to buy into one person's vision but I'm a winner, I've been a serial winner my whole career.

"We're in the Champions League (next season), my thought process of what I've been doing this year is trying to build a team that can be successful for four, five, six years, but I'm the manager of the football club and that decision is not in my hands."

Stats don't make good reading for Ange

His demeanour suggested a genuine belief that he's far from done at the football club, but his detractors will still point to 21 defeats from 37 Premier League games, just six home wins and an overall win percentage of just 29.1% in the 2024/25 season.

Since taking the job, Ange's overall win record of 31 from 75 league games (41.3%) is the worst of any Spurs manager in the past decade, bar Cristian Stellini, who was only in charge for four matches.

19 wins at home doesn't sound awful until you realise that Antonio Conte managed 20 home victories in 19 games less than Postecoglou, and even Jose Mourinho was victorious on 16 occasions at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium despite being in charge for 17 fewer league games.

The Australian has also lost 33 league matches in the same period, which is only one less than Conte, Mourinho and Stellini combined.

However Ange wants to dress things up, those are the hard facts.

Does Daniel Levy stick or twist?

Whilst his position has been under threat, it clearly isn't untenable, and Daniel Levy risks making himself even more unpopular than he already is with Tottenham fans if he sacks the man who has brought the club its first trophy of any description in almost two decades.

The question that needs to be addressed is whether Levy and the club hierarchy truly believe that they are already at the point of no return with Ange.

Simply put, if Postecoglou survives any vote of no confidence, then the club have to back him with whatever he needs.

With Champions League football on the horizon, that will mean a significant financial investment - something that would certainly be on the cards anyway if a new manager were to be brought in.

Assuming, therefore, that Ange is still in charge next season and such an outlay is finally forthcoming, then the ball is very much in his court.

Decisions, decisions...
