Why Havertz was allowed to retake Chelsea pen v Dortmund amid complaints

Chelsea news: The Blues were afforded a second bite at the cherry after Kai Havertz missed his initial penalty.

Kai Havertz was given a massive reprieve for Chelsea after being allowed to retake a second-half penalty. The German hit the post with the initial spot-kick but was soon waiting from 12-yards again after Borussia Dortmund's players were judged to have encroached into the box.

Chelsea were 1-0 up on the night at the time after Raheem Sterling's first-half strike when the referee penalised Marius Wolf for blocking Ben Chilwell's cross with his hand. Havertz, the newly appointed penalty taker, couldn't convert though, only able to hit the post after sending Alex Meyer the wrong way.

VAR came to the rescue though with the 24-year-old offered a second chance from the spot with several yellow shirts running into the area before the kick was taken. Havertz made no mistake with the second strike, converting to put his side 2-1 up on aggregate.

Rules on penalties state: "The players other than the kicker and goalkeeper must be; at least 9.15 m (10 yds) from the penalty mark; behind the penalty mark; inside the field of play and; outside the penalty area.
