Former Chelsea striker Diego Costa will continue the twilight of his career in Brazil after completing a free transfer to Gremio.

The 35-year-old was without a club after his contract with fellow Brazilian side Botafogo was allowed to expire after a four-month spell.

Costa had previously spent a season with Wolves but failed to have anywhere near the impact in England that he did during his successful years with Chelsea in the prime of his career.

Gremio announced the news on Thursday night with a tweet that read: 'he is Spanish, but has Brazilian blood and titles wherever he has been!

'Diego Costa arrives to strengthen Imortal's attack. Multi-time champion in Europe, he has already worn yellow and red and will now defend the Tricolor mantle. Welcome!'

In a sparkling club career, Costa has scored 192 goals for the likes of Atletico Madrid and Chelsea and has also turned out for the Brazil and Spain national teams.

He won the Premier League title twice with Chelsea as well as two La Ligas and a Europa League with Atletico.

His stint at Wolves was less successful as he managed one goal in just 25 outings, though a good portion of those were from the bench.

Despite being born in Brazil, he only made his first league appearance there in 2021, when he joined Atletico Mineiro and won the league and cup double.
