Manchester United are 'exploring a January move for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba'.
The 21-year-old star, who was also of interest to the Old Trafford club in the summer, remains high on their list of priority transfer targets - as reported by Daily Mail Sport.
And according to Sky Sports, United have now 'explored the conditions of a potential move for him in January', adding that Brighton's stance has remained the same - that Baleba is not for sale.
It would take a club record fee if United were to meet the asking price set by the Seagulls when they made tentative enquiries in August.
They told United the young Cameroonian could only leave for a fee of £115m, which would eclipse the £89m spent on Paul Pogba in 2016.
Baleba's current deal runs until 2028 and has the option of an year extension.
The long-term contract puts Brighton in a strong selling position and they would be able to command a huge fee for the athletic midfielder. After the links to Man United in the summer, Baleba's form at the start of the season was not up to his usual standards.
But he has gradually produced the level of performances that made him stand out to United and other top clubs last term.
United are 'also also looking at younger talents like Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and Olympiacos’ Christos Mouzakitis', according to Sky reporter Danyal Khan.
As Daily Mail Sport have previously reported, Baleba is among United's midfield primary targets.
But Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is understood to top the list, although the England international is unlikely to be available until the summer.
Ruben Amorim's side are also keeping tabs on Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace and Wolves' Joao Gomes.
Bournemouth's Tyler Adams is also a name that has cropped up in conversations over United’s potential midfield targets at around £40m.
It seems unlikely that United will be able to get a huge deal over the line in the January window but could well be laying the foundations for a summer switch for Baleba.
The club splashed out £225million last summer on the likes of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.
With high earners Casemiro, Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho all out of contract at the end of the season, and Marcus Rashford’s £325,000-a-week deal potentially disappearing if he completes a permanent move to Barcelona, United could trim as much as £1 million per week from their wage bill.
The cost-cutting measures and redundancies instigated by Sir Jim Ratcliffe resulted in an operating profit of £13.3m and a forecast for full-year revenues of £640m-£660m.
Selling Alejandro Garnacho and Antony while loaning out Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Rasmus Hojlund, also helped United to raise revenue and drive down the wage bill by a total £6.6m to comply with profit and sustainability rules.
Although the club are now understood to be well within PSR limitations, the numbers would still have to add up before United could pay a substantial fee for a big signing in January.

If these news is to go by, I see United board, coaching crew and all as a bunch of mediocres. Ayyoub Bouaddi (Lille) and Christos Mouzakitis (olympiacos Piraeus) you are eyeing to buy, and you have a midfielder like Kobbie and Colbly of that age grade, you don't use them, you bench and loan them out Only Baleba, Wharton and Anderson I see better. Sesko and Zirkzee are just figure heads, I know so many persons in here will support his decision to not use Chiddo Obi and others saying they are young or over hyped, but you loan them out and take big money to sign their age mate that does nothing but rubbish. How do they grow when you don't use them instead you complain, take the likes of Gavi, Pedri, Cubasi, Frank Garcia, Cararras, they feature them in games and build their confidence but no, the ones you buy outside with big money and they come to play rubbish, go 15 to 20 matches without scoring a goal, no threat Ivan Toney would have been very better than Sesko and Co. I just hate Manchester United Scout and recruitment policy
Yea, the wingers, even right andedt back done cross out. Dorgu does not know when to cross the ball, Dalot crosses is once in a blue moon

I doubt why! He is one of our most creative players. Very technically precise in his passing and defensive support! I really disagree that you left him out of the line-up.

Sunderland coach? I laugh 😆 Bringing in small team mentality to a big team 😂 By next season the same sunderland that did well this season could potentially get relegated or more so end up at number 17, 16 on the table… Where is Leicester, Wolves and more now🤌🏻 Give Amorim time and see wonders, he already knows how to cope under intense pressure and that alone is a plus while sacking him will automatically return Man United to point zero and start from scratch and that has been United problem since 2013 sacking coaches and still remain stagnant. This Man United team needs at least 3 years of good work behind the scene and signing of players to challenge again. Bringing in another coach will means another tactics and another set of players So the ones in the squad will have to be sold. When you guys signed Ten Hag then it looks like he was the savior until you guys started to hate on him and then he needed time to rebuild well after he was sacked who came in change tactic and needed his own model of players. The new Man United owner knows exactly what he is doing to be honest because sacking is not the solution instead working together to develop better strategies to comply with the team’s progress

I later understood football is business So many decisions were wrong to the field No one talk about wrong decisions on the pitch All we care is who is not scoring. Ronaldo was frustrated cus no midfielder cus Bruno will always be selfish and always working as second striker not AM or CM
