Liverpool looked to be closing in on a deadline day deal for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi but a dramatic twist at the eleventh hour could see them miss out on the England star
Crystal Palace could sensationally pull the plug on Liverpool's move for Marc Guehi after seeing a deal for Igor Julio collapse on deadline day in a dramatic late twist.
The Premier League champions have been in talks to sign Guehi since last week and finally struck an agreement worth £35million for the highly-rated England star on Monday. But Crystal Palace's failure to get a loan deal for Igor over the line means Liverpool could be in store for an anxious end to deadline day.
A deal is now in jeopardy with the south Londoners encountering difficulties in their bid to replace Guehi, with a deal for Igor breaking down and a move for Jaydee Canvot yet to be concluded. That's despite Guehi undergoing at least part of a medical ahead of his switch to Anfield after Liverpool and Palace struck an agreement for a player who will be a free agent in less than 12 months time.
Palace have a massive conundrum in that head coach Oliver Glasner - who has led the club to FA Cup success and a major European competition for the first time in their history - has been opposed to selling his captain from the start. The Austrian values Guehi both as a player and a dressing room leader and has spoken out about his desire to keep hold of the England centre-back.
His desire not to sell was further emboldened by the sale of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal and has further grown on deadline day with the club’s struggles to find a replacement he deems suitable for his skipper. Teenage French defender Canvot is joining from Toulouse but Glasner sees him as a project rather than an immediate starter, while a loan for Igor Julio from Brighton has broken down.
Palace CEO Steve Parrish has spoken about the club owing money on players who have arrived at Selhurst Park in recent years, and his belief that it would be financially irresponsible to NOT sell Guehi if their valuation was met - something Liverpool have now done. Glasner will be upset if Guehi goes and there is no replacement he deems of sufficient quality.
And there are growing fears in south London that a move to Bayer Leverkusen could well be on the cards after Erik ten Hag’s sacking earlier on Monday following just two Bundesliga games at the helm. Glasner did tremendous work at Eintracht Frankfurt, winning the Europa League, and Leverkusen bosses are under big pressure to make a statement appointment that appeases supporters after making a big noise about the arrival of ex-Manchester United manager Ten Hag, before quickly realising he was an ill fit at the BayArena.
The Austrian fits the bill and an opportunity to join a Champions League club could be too much to say no to, particularly if Palace’s skipper is sold from under him.

Oliver Glasner should stop this childish and unprofessional behavior of his, what if the defender run down his contract and leave, is he going to follow him wherever he goes? Doesn’t he know Mc has only one season left on his contract and has refused to renew? Instead of him looking for replacements for the player, you waited till the last day and now telling cock and bull stories. Let him leave. Glasner is a failure.
You are absolutely an embarrassment. If you ever get to achieve 1% of Glasner’s achievements then you should count yourself lucky in life.

PALACE are truly cooking a recipe for relegation. If they lose Guehi, and their coach after losing, Eze I fear relegation is looming
