Roberto: Real Madrid wanted to sign me before I joined Barcelona

Sergi Roberto has revealed that Real Madrid wanted to bring him to their La Fabrica academy before he joined Barcelona.

Roberto moved to Barcelona from Gimnastic de Tarragona in 2006 as teenager, despite interest from Los Blancos.

"I was playing at Nastic de Tarragona, in the youth teams. [Real] Madrid asked for me," he told TV3's Al Cotxe programme.

"A few days after, Barcelona also made contact with Nastic and my father, who was a Madrid fan. But now he's changed and is 100 percent Barcelona."

Barcelona face Manchester United in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday and Roberto is looking forward to the occasion.

"We're doing very well and have just got to finish the tie off," he said.

"In the end, the important thing is that the team ends up winning titles, but personal matters are always important and, yes, things are going very well."

Roberto's most famous moment in the Blaugrana shirt came two years ago in the same competition with his winning goal in the famous comeback against Paris Saint-Germain.

"I wasn't happy with what happened after [the goal]," he joked.

"All my teammates threw themselves on top of me. I remember being at the bottom and everyone was on top of me.

"That day was crazy. I couldn't sleep after."

Luis Enrique was in charge of Barcelona that day and, during his time as coach, the current Spain boss used Roberto as a right-back on several occasions.

"Luis Enrique found me a new position at full-back," said Roberto.

"In the end, I adapted to this new position and it's what allowed me to play so many minutes, and as many games as they want me to [play]."
