Mikel Arteta has revealed Granit Xhaka is likely to stay at Arsenal in January.

Xhaka appeared set for the exit under former manager Unai Emery, especially after his falling out with the Arsenal fans in October following his substitution against Crystal Palace.

He was dropped for a long spell under Emery but Arteta has brought the 27-year-old back into the fold since being appointed.

Arteta is keen for the Swiss midfielder to stay at the Emirates and seems to have got his wish.

The Arsenal manager said: 'I think he's going to stay. I really like him.

'If we get him on board he can be a tremendous player for the football club.'

When asked whether Xhaka had given him any assurances over not leaving in January, Arteta added: 'He did, yes.'

Xhaka was part of the side as Arsenal won their first home league game since early October by beating Manchester United 2-0 on Wednesday night.

Nicolas Pepe and Sokratis got the two goals, with Arsenal putting together an impressive display to hand the Spaniard his first three points since taking over from Unai Emery.

Arsenal moved up to 10th in the Premier League table with the victory.
