Match Report
Portugal swept past Sweden 5-2 in a friendly on Thursday as manager Roberto Martinez rested Cristiano Ronaldo and several other key players in the build-up to the European Championship in Germany, which starts in June.
"It was a very important test for us. We worked on defensive concepts, I really liked the new links, the spirit and the commitment was very good. But there are other concepts that we need to work on and improve," Martinez told Portuguese television RTP.
Portugal, who stormed into the Euro 2024 finals by winning all 10 of their qualifiers, opened up a three-goal lead in the first half thanks to strikes by Rafael Leao, Matheus Nunes and Bruno Fernandes.
Leao opened the scoring in the 24th minute, firing a brilliant strike into the top corner from a rebound after Bernardo Silva burst into the box and unleashed a curling shot off the post.
In the 33rd minute, Manchester City midfielder Nunes sliced through the Swedish defence before darting a low strike just inside the right post to extend the locals' lead at Guimaraes, before Fernandes tapped in a close-range effort from a Nelson Semedo cross in the last play of the half.
Substitute Bruma extended their lead with a first-touch effort in the 57th minute but Viktor Gyokeres hit back for Sweden from close range a minute later.
Goncalo Ramos struck from inside the box in the 62nd minute to extend Portugal's lead from another fine individual effort by Semedo running up and down the right channel, before Sweden's Gustaf Nilsson netted a stoppage-time header.
"It was a good game but we could have done better because we conceded two goals and we shouldn't have," Nunes told Portuguese channel Sport TV.
"We want to go into the Euros strong and always try to keep a clean sheet. It's easier to win when you don't concede goals. That's what we're going to try to improve, to keep scoring a lot and not conceding."

you see why sometimes I don't comment here because it like everyone here started watching football yesterday Portugal won a match and you all are shouting they play better without Ronaldo this and that , after all this 15 years that Ronaldo has been with the team and saved them almost always do you expect it to be so ..Haaba would you say the same if Argentina won without Messi?? Some of you didn't even watch the match yet runned to the section to comment like kids ..they played Sweden and those who watched the game will know that if cr7 was in the game they would have won more than that margin and you expect ramos to lead the lines in euros ?? that shows your slow thinking

My brother we all love Ronaldo but you must accept that this team has to move on. he has been their main man for more than 15 years he has been excellent but we have to accept that Ronaldo has passed his peek. He doesn’t have that energy to move around without the ball quicker. even with the ball he’s slower now his body can not allow his to play like he used to let’s accept that as a fact. The team should give him his flowers if he still wants to be part it means he’s shouldn’t play every game. Portugal has a lot of hungry players. Am not a fan of Messi but he was instrumental in winning the World Cup how ever you can see that the Argentina is moving to point of playing without him. Even Messi has loss a lot but however he’s 2 years younger and still has a lil more to give. Brother. Portugal has been bless with three strikers amazing attackers who can be a replacement they can do what he has done over the years but they can help the team right now with the energy and many more.
