Spain sporting director Jose Francisco Molina made clear on Tuesday that Luis Enrique's return is largely down to the fact that he was the figurehead that started La Roja's new project.
The former Barcelona boss had to step down from his position in June due to the illness and subsequent death of his daughter, yet the way in which Moreno has led Spain since then caused many to think that he would be the full-time coach moving forward, despite La Roja leaving the door open to Luis Enrique upon his departure.
"I conveyed to you that we were going to assess the return of Luis Enrique, if he was willing to return," Molina told the press conference.
"The leader of this project was Luis Enrique. He was the coach we chose.
"My obligation was to assess his desire to return, but beyond that we were delighted with the work of Robert."
Following Spain's 7-0 win over Malta in Cadiz last Friday, Molina stated that Moreno would be in charge for the 2020 European Championship, yet three days later news began to filter out that Luis Enrique would be returning to that role.
"I did not lie," Molina said.
"I said that he was the coach under contract and that if nothing happened he would be in charge at the Euros.
"There was nothing decided. I don't know if I was that unequivocal - I don't think so."
Moreno decided to not attend Tuesday morning's meeting with Rubiales and Molina, sending his lawyers instead.
"The meeting was before the press conference [on Tuesday]," he stated.
"I was not surprised that he said he was looking ahead to the Euros because everyone expresses how they feel."

That's a big lie, he was told that he will be leading the team to Euro 2020, that was the reason they made him sign a permanent deal until after Euro. This is a pure lack of disrespect to Moreno, despite all the effort and hard work he channelled in the team, the FA never had faith in him. If they had faith in him, the FA wouldn't gone to convinced Luis Enrique to return.

This move feels more sentimental than professional. Enrique didn't just take a leave. He resigned due to understandable circumstances. You gave Moreno the job permanently. Moreno performed well enough that he got spain to EURO 2020.

I think I Moreno has been very badly treated. I like Enrique but i have a feeling the bad blood will affect his performance. Spain are carving a niche for themselves in courting coaching controversies after qualifying for major tournaments.
