The 2021/22 Premier League season is down to the wire as Manchester City and Liverpool will fight it out on the final matchday for the ultimate glory.

Manchester City are leading the charts with 90 points, one more than Liverpool as they take on Aston Villa in their final game. Liverpool, on the other hand, face Wolves.

This will be the ninth time in the Premier League era - starting 1992/93 - that the title will be decided on the final matchday.

Manchester United, the most successful team in the English top division league, have won the title on the final day the most number of times (4), followed by Manchester City who won it twice.

One of the most memorable final matchdays was in the 2011/12 season when Sergio Aguero's last-minute goal helped Manchester City pip their rivals Manchester United to win their first league title since City Football Group (CFG) took over.

1994-95 (Blackburn Rovers)

Blackburn Rovers secured their third English top division and first Premier League title on the final matchday of the season. Kenny Dalglish’s side went into the final matchday with 89 points, two more than reigning champions Manchester United. Blackburn eventually won the title despite losing 2-1 against Liverpool as the Red Devils could manage only a point against West Ham, drawing the tie 1-1.

1995-96 (Manchester United)

Manchester United sealed their third Premier League title and 10th top division title overall on the final matchday of the season. Sir Alex Ferguson’s men (79) had a two-point lead over Newcastle United (77) as they took on Middlesbrough while the Magpies faced Tottenham Hotspur. United won their match 3-0 but Newcastle were held to a 1-1 draw.

1998-99 (Manchester United)

Manchester United had 76 points going into the final matchday, a point more than Arsenal. They eventually clinched the title in a dramatic fashion as they came back from behind to beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1. Arsenal had won their game 1-0 against Aston Villa.

2007-08 (Manchester United)

Manchester United and Chelsea headed into the final matchday with 84 points each. The Red Devils clinched the title by beating Wigan Athletic 2-0. Chelsea drew 1-1 against Bolton Wanderers.

2009-10 (Chelsea)

The title race went to the final day of the season with Chelsea (83) one point ahead of Manchester United (82). Eventually, Chelsea won the title beating Wigan Athletic 8-0 in their final game while Manchester United won 4-0 against Stoke City.

2011-12 (Manchester City)

The two Manchester rivals went went to the final matchday locked on 86 points. Manchester United won their tie 1-0 against Sunderland but Manchester City’s game against Queens Park Rangers was the one that created all the noise. City initially took the lead but QPR came back and scored two goals. Edin Dzeko then scored the equaliser in the injury time and then seconds before the final whistle, Sergio Aguero netted the winner to seal the match as well as the title in the Cityzens’ favour who had a better goal difference than their city rivals.

2013-14 (Manchester City)

Liverpool were at the top of the table for the entirety of the second half of the season but they faltered in the final two weeks which allowed Manchester City to overtake them and eventually win the title on the final matchday.

The two teams headed to the final day with Manchester City having a two-point lead. The Cityzens defeated West Ham United 2-0 in their final match while Liverpool beat Newcastle United 2-1.

2018-19 (Manchester City)

Similar to the current season, in 2018/19, Manchester City and Liverpool went into the final day with Pep Guardiola's men leading by a point. City defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 4-1 to win the title eventually. The Reds won their last match 1-0 against Wolves.
