Sheffield Wednesday to start next season with TWELVE point deduction

Sheffield Wednesday will start next season with a twelve point deduction, the English Football League (EFL) has ruled.

A statement was issued on Friday afternoon, in which the governing body announced the club would be issued the deduction for 'breaching profitability and sustainability rules.'

The verdict was reached by an independent disciplinary commission, and has now been put to the club, though it means Wednesday will avoid relegation due to the punishment coming into play next season.

Latest developments come after the club were charged in November for a breach of rules relating to the £60 million sale of their Hillsborough stadium.

The charge related to a series of questions surrounding the transaction, with the EFL demanding answers regarding 'how and when' then stadium was sold.

Issue was then taken with the inclusion in the 2017-2018 accounts, when the stadium was actually sold a year later.

The EFL statement read: 'The Club was charged in November 2019 and referred to an independent Disciplinary Commission, which conducted a full hearing at the end of June 2020, before finding the Club guilty based on the fact that the Club should not have included profits from the sale of Hillsborough Stadium in the Club's financial statements for the period ending July 2018.

'The Club was found not guilty of a further charge of breaching its duty of utmost good faith to the EFL by deliberately concealing information from the League in respect of filings made in respect of the Profitability and Sustainability Rules.'
