CL: Lazio unlucky in Dortmund

  /  autty

Ciro Immobile’s penalty cancelled out a Raphael Guerreiro opener, but Lazio had the chances to win their 1-1 draw at Borussia Dortmund.

As Club Brugge beat Zenit 3-0 in the other game, it all goes down to the final match.

This was a head-to-head at the top of the group, with one point separating the leaders from Lazio. In a huge blow, BVB lost hitman Erling Haaland, Emre Can and Thomas Meunier to injury, while Jadon Sancho and Axel Witsel were dropped. The Aquile had Sergej Milinkovic-Savic back from COVID, but Luiz Felipe only fit for the bench.

After a difficult start under pressure, Lazio started to build confidence and Joaquin Correa dribbled through defenders only to be denied by the goalkeeper from close range.

Lazio created a wonderful passing move from left to right and rolled back for Francesco Acerbi to incredibly prod wide from close range. Saving his blushes was the fact the defender was offside, otherwise that’d be a howler.

Pepe Reina was called into action by Giovanni Reyna, who unleashed a screamer from the edge of the area to sting his gloves, then Thorgan Hazard couldn’t keep the rebound on target.

Another very promising Lazio counter was cut short after Correa had run on to an Immobile through ball, however, the Aquile were stunned on the stroke of half-time.

Reina and Patric did not play it out well from the back, Dortmund took advantage and Raphael Guerreiro completed the give and go through the centre.

Luis Alberto immediately fired over the bar after the restart and Immobile forced a tough low save from Burki with his snapshot towards the far bottom corner.

The referee initially looked as if he was turning his back, but then pointed to the spot when Nico Schulz was late and clumsy on Milinkovic-Savic right on the edge of the penalty area. Immobile converted successfully for the deserved equaliser.

Schulz immediately had the opportunity to make up for his error, but drilled wide from seven yards. Lazio substitute Andreas Pereira was also wasteful with an effort charged down from the edge of the box.

Lazio almost scored a truly magnificent goal, as Immobile’s cross-field pass was controlled by a great Manuel Lazzari first touch, he crossed it back for Immobile to volley from the D and Burki somehow got his fingertips to turn it out of the far bottom corner.

Burki was decisive again in stoppages with a fingertip save to turn the looping Andreas Pereira free kick out of the far top corner. On the resulting corner, Immobile claimed his volley had been charged down by a hand, but the referee blew the final whistle.
