RB Leipzig goalkeeper Gulacsi rises after making no appearance for Liverpool

Remember the name Peter Gulacsi? Fans of Liverpool, Hereford United, Tranmere Rovers and Hull City might recall the goalkeeper as he plied his trade at those clubs several years ago.

Gulacsi starred in RB Leipzig's 1-1 draw with reigning champions Bayern Munich last weekend as Julian Nagelsmann's side maintained their unbeaten start.

He pulled off a host of crucial saves to ensure Leipzig earned a point. Gulacsi was up against one of the best goalkeepers in the world in Manuel Neuer and he produced an impressive display.

The RB Leipzig No 1 saved six out of seven shots faced while his opposite number kept out four of the five shots on target.

'Pete was the best goalkeeper last season and today his performance was also great,' manager Nagelsmann told bundesliga.com.

'You need a very good goalkeeper if you want to be one of the best teams in the league, and Pete is one of the best goalkeepers in the league.'

Since August 2018 Gulacsi has been impressive between the sticks in the German top flight, achieving a save percentage of 77.8 per cent. In the same time frame Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who is the highest rated goalkeeper on video game FIFA 20, has a save percentage of 78 per cent in La Liga.

Meanwhile Liverpool's No 1 Alisson has a lower save percentage of 77.6 per cent in the Premier League, as does Manchester City's Ederson (70.1 per cent) and Manchester United's David de Gea (69.6 per cent) as well as Bayern's Neuer (62 per cent) in the Bundesliga.

Rewind six years and being talked about in the same breath as the game's top goalkeepers might have been hard to believe.

Gulacsi was coming to the end of his time at Premier League giants Liverpool.

A teenage Gulacsi was given a chance most aspiring young footballers dream of back in 2007 – the opportunity to play in the England's top flight.

He joined Liverpool on a loan deal from MTK Budapest but he did not make an appearance for the Reds.

The shot-stopper did sign for the club permanently a season later but in six years at Anfield he failed to make his mark.

The third-choice goalkeeper was sent out on loan to Hereford United, Tranmere Rovers and Hull and did not play a single game for the Reds.

Gulacsi made 18 appearances for Hereford, played 17 times for Tranmere and represented Hull on 15 occasions during his time in England.

After not getting the breakthrough he needed on Merseyside Gulacsi made the move to Red Bull Salzburg in 2013.

He became the Austrian Bundesliga side's No 1 and lifted the league title twice during his two seasons at the club.

Now at Leipzig he is first choice in a side that is bidding to topple Bayern in the Bundesliga.

Gulacsi, who has been given a higher rating (85) than Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga (84) on FIFA 20, is now making a name for himself.
