Can Jamie Vardy break his own record of goals in consecutive games?

Amid Leicester's sublime start to the Premier League season the fact that Jamie Vardy is closing in on a piece of history may have got a little bit lost.

It was during the Foxes' run to the title in 2015-16 that Vardy broke Ruud van Nistelrooy's record of goals in consecutive league games when he scored in 11 matches in a row.

But now, with seven goals in his last seven games, Vardy is looking to surpass his own record this campaign and must score in five more matches to make history again.

Vardy's pace and the timing of his runs were crucial to the counter-attacking football played under Claudio Ranieri four seasons ago.

He was scoring goals right from the start of the season but then exploded into life during a sensational streak of 11 matches.

Goals against Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Stoke and Arsenal kick started things in September 2015 before he maintained that form against Norwich, Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Brom in October.

There was still not much recognition for Leicester as title challengers but Vardy's goals ensured they kept pace at the top of the table.

A goal at home to Watford took him to the brink of Van Nistelrooy's record of scoring in 10 consecutive matches before he drew level with the Dutchman thanks to a goal away at Newcastle.

Vardy then set a new record of goals in 11 matches in a row when he fired the ball past David de Gea in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United. It was a sublime run that laid the foundations for his side's title tilt.

Now, after slamming home a penalty against Watford on Wednesday night, Vardy has scored 23 goals in 25 games under Brendan Rodgers in the Premier League.

His run this season started in the win over Burnley back in October and really took off when he scored a hat-trick in the 9-0 demolition of Southampton.

Vardy also found the back of the net against Crystal Palace, Arsenal, Brighton and Everton before scoring past Ben Foster in the win over Watford that took them three points clear of Manchester City in second again.

However, a quick look at Leicester's fixtures will show two games that could bring an end to the streak.

The next outing at Aston Villa presents a good chance to score an eighth in a row and he will back himself to make it nine at home to Norwich a week later.

But then Leicester face both Manchester City and Liverpool either side of Christmas, two games that will test their title credentials and prove a serious threat to Vardy's chances of setting a new record.

If, somehow, Vardy is able to find the back of the net in both of those games then he will have the chance to set a new record against West Ham at the London Stadium before the New Year.
