Gerrard, Fowler, TAA... Liverpool's best Academy graduates of EPL era ranked

  /  autty

There have been some incredible players who have emerged from Liverpool's Academy over the years.

Some have gone on to have long and successful careers with the Reds, while others have moved elsewhere and gone on to great things.

With the current Academy crop containing plenty of players who are hopeful of making the grade long-term, we have taken a look at the best of those who have come through in the past - with plenty of familiar names, and some less so too.

In the Premier League era, there have been many players to make it at Anfield or go elsewhere, with these 10 the best of that period.

The list takes into account not just their time at Liverpool, but also the rest of their careers - some of which are still ongoing.

10. Peter Gulacsi

The goalkeeper left Liverpool for Red Bull Salzburg in 2013, where he made the move to RB Leipzig two years later, where he is now first choice between the sticks.

He is a key part of the team who have secured their place in the Champions League quarter-finals this season after they beat Tottenham, and kept 15 Bundesliga clean sheets last season - the most in the division.

9. Mikel San Jose

Now with seven international caps at senior level for his country, Spain, San Jose returned to Athletic Bilbao after a spell with Liverpool's Academy between 2007 and 2010.

He has played his entire senior career there, where he has been a hugely influential player for the Basque outfit, making 304 league appearances in La Liga so far - an average of around 27 per season.

8. Conor Coady

The former Reds defensive midfielder, now operating as part of Nuno Espirito Santo's back three, has worked his way back to the top flight after leaving Liverpool.

He now captains Wolves, who could well be a Champions League outfit next season should they finish in the top four or win the Europa League - two very realistic possibilities.

7. Raheem Sterling

By no means a fans favourite these days, Sterling departed Anfield in 2015 and has since won the Premier League twice, plus one FA Cup and four League Cups, with Manchester City.

He signed for the Reds at the age of 15 from Queens Park Rangers back in 2010 and recently admitted he still 'loves' Liverpool.

6. Trent Alexander-Arnold

One of Jurgen Klopp's current mainstays, the right-back has won the Champions League, already appeared in a World Cup, and is on the verge of picking up the Premier League title as a crucial player, and he's still only 21.

He's highly likely to move up these rankings in the coming seasons, with he and his teammates in the perfect place to push on and win even more silverware in the coming years.

5. Michael Owen

Owen won everything in the English game apart from the Champions League and won the Ballon d'Or in 2001, though he will never be forgiven by many for joining Manchester United, where he picked up his only Premier League title in 2011.

4. Steve McManaman

The attacking midfielder won the Champions League twice and La Liga twice (with Real Madrid) during his career, having departed the Reds on a free transfer in 1999 at the age of 27, choosing to join them ahead of Barcelona and Juventus, who were also in the mix.

3. Robbie Fowler

Having won two League Cups, one FA Cup, one UEFA Cup and one UEFA Super Cup in his career, Fowler probably didn't win as many trophies as a man of his talent deserved.

Nevertheless, he was absolutely sensational and scored 183 times for boyhood club Liverpool. There's a reason he's affectionately known as God among the Anfield faithful.

2. Jamie Carragher

Having won the Champions League in Istanbul, as well as two UEFA Super Cups, three League Cups and two FA Cups, across 737 Liverpool appearances, he needs no introduction.

1. Steven Gerrard

Probably the most obvious name on the list, he is self explanatory.

Gerrard might not have won a Premier League title, but that was not down to his lack of ability - far from it.

His name will take some topping.

Left-back Stephen Warnock narrowly misses out on the list, having had an impressive career at the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Leeds United after making 40 appearances for the Reds' senior side, scoring once.

Harry Wilson, too, just misses out, based on the fact he is still young and has not fully established himself in the Premier League yet.
