The young right-back found the back of the net for the Neroverdi in his first game of the campaign

Ghana prospect Claud Adjapong made the most of a rare playing opportunity on Thursday as Sassuolo beat SPAL in the Italian Serie A.

The Italian born's strike was crucial for the Neroverdi, who came out with a 2-0 away victory at Stadio Paolo Mazza.

It was his first league appearance of the season, having warmed the bench in all five preceding games.

After a barren first half, Adjapong opened the scoring for Sassuolo in the 59th minute, stabbing home a rebound from close range after SPAL goalkeeper Alfred Gomis parried Khouma Babacar's shot.

When all looked headed for a 1-0 win for the Neroverdi, Alessandro Matri, having latched on to a through ball, made it 2-0 with a goal on the stroke of full-time.

The three points won have taken Sassuolo to third on the league table, while SPAL sit five places below on the eighth spot.

Adjapong, who was substituted in the 73rd minute, would hope that his Thursday’s exploit becomes the start of good things this season.

Last term, the 20-year-old made 16 Serie A appearances involving 14 starts to help the Neroverdi finish 11th.

Born to Ghanaian parents in Modena, Italy, the full-back currently plays for his country of birth at youth level.

He is, however, eligible to switch his international allegiance to Ghana as he has not featured for Italy at senior level.
