Hazard, Kante or Jorginho… who is the key player at Chelsea?

  /  autty

Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea and Unai Emery's Arsenal meet on Saturday in what will be a coming together of two sides trying to comprehend what their new head coaches want.

For his first Premier League game at Stamford Bridge, Sarri may call on Eden Hazard to start following a productive 14-minute cameo against Huddersfield Town last weekend.

A few Chelsea fans will also catch their first glimpse of the Jorginho and N'Golo Kante partnership, though a debate has been brewing about those three this week.

Some have claimed summer signing Jorginho is Sarri's main man, while others believe bums-off-seats specialist Hazard and the reliable Kante also deserve recognition.

Ahead of their clash against Arsenal, Sportsmail has taken a look at what all three bring to the party for Sarri before picking out our own Chelsea MVP.

A CASE FOR JORGINHO

Well we know former Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robson isn't a fan. The ESPN pundit gave a brutal opinion on Jorginho this week, explaining he cannot understand what Sarri sees in him.

'I've seen him play for Napoli,' Robson said. 'Napoli were a good side and I looked at their team, when I'm picking out players, Jorginho would have been the eighth or ninth I would have picked.'

Harsh, to say the least, though the 53-year-old also criticised Jorginho for being a 'square and sideways' passer so you begin to wonder if Robson watched the right player.

Sarri brought Jorginho with him to Chelsea for a reason – because the £57million man knows the ins and outs of the 'Sarri-ball' system. It is his job to work in the engine room, dictating everything.

He is at the centre of Chelsea's universe and that became clear during training drills in pre-season, when he was told to start attack after attack. Sarri wants that to become second nature.

A month on from signing, Jorginho has already shown signs of his comfortability in midfield – maybe not against Manchester City in the Community Shield, but certainly against Huddersfield.

Should the Italy international suffer an injury this season, it will be interesting to see how Sarri's side copes.

A CASE FOR EDEN HAZARD

In 14 minutes against Huddersfield, Hazard completed six take-ons – and no-one in the Premier League on Saturday managed more.

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba also managed six but played 84 minutes. Newcastle's Kenedy likewise completed six and was on the pitch for 90 minutes.

Hazard only returned to Chelsea from his post-World Cup holidays after the Community Shield and is still getting to grips with Sarri's system. When in full swing, he should thrive.

'Sarri-ball' may revolve around Jorginho in midfield but Hazard is Chelsea's best player. He knows how to open spaces, dribble, beat defenders, create chances and win matches.

At Napoli, left-sided forward Lorenzo Insigne went from scoring 16 goals in his first three seasons to scoring 47 in his following three under Sarri.

Big things are expected of Hazard in front of goal this season and Huddersfield was encouraging.

In 2017-18, the 27-year-old topped the Premier League for dribbles completed (165) and created the fourth most chances (84).

Had he left for Real Madrid in the summer, the general consensus is that Chelsea would not stand a chance of making it back into the Champions League positions. Hazard is that influential.

A CASE FOR N'GOLO KANTE

The Community Shield highlighted how much Kante means to Chelsea. Champions of England Manchester City exploited the gaping gap between defence and midfield and won comfortably.

As pointed out on Match of the Day, Kante has a new role to play alongside Jorginho this season.

One move against Huddersfield saw him surge forward to join the attack instead of hanging back. Had Pedro looked up during this particular counter, he would have noticed Kante on his right, waiting to potentially score his second of the afternoon.

When Pedro was dispossessed, there was no throwing of arms in the air from Kante in frustration. Instead, the 27-year-old simply sprinted back into position.

Sarri wants his new-look Chelsea to play pressing football and win the ball high up the pitch – a job which suits Kante to a tee. He will relish being a box-to-box midfielder and, should the French World Cup winner add goals to his game, he would reach a whole new level.

There were worries in pre-season about how Kante and Jorginho would play together. Sarri clearly has a plan for both. It is so far, so good, though we will see how it works against Arsenal.

VERDICT

These three players are each crucial to Sarri's Chelsea in their own way, yet the man with the power to influence most has to be Eden Hazard.

The Belgian can be the difference between a win and a defeat, depending on whether he turns up or not. He can be devastating when in the mood and will be a key cog in the Sarri machine.

His greatest goals tally for Chelsea to date has been 19 in all competitions, with 14 of those scored in the Premier League. This season, his new head coach wants more.

on Saturday, Arsenal are facing a left-back crisis. Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Sead Kolasinac are out, Nacho Monreal is not fully fit and right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner could be forced to fill in.

Luckily for them, Hazard tends to occupy the other side, otherwise he could have had a field day.

It may too soon to tell for sure but as it stands, Hazard would have to be a frontrunner as Sarri's MVP.
