Legendary Simeone: 9 years, 499 games, 7 trophies and respect from all Europe

It seems as though it was yesterday when Atletico Madrid officially announced the appointment of Diego Simeone as their new coach.

His first training session in a crowded Estadio Vicente Calderon demonstrated that his arrival was about to change something at Los Rojiblancos.

Simeone was chosen as the coach that will bring back the enthusiasm of Atletico's supporters, who had suffered for various years due to the club's instability.

When asked about his team's objectives in his first season at the club, Cholo already made clear what his side's mentality would be.

"Atletico always have the highest demands," said Simeone. "But I live in reality and the reality is the Malaga game."

Nine years later, that speech has not changed at all, with Simeone always highlighting his match-by-match mentality in press conferences.

On January 7, 2012, Simeone took charge of his first game in the Atletico dugout against Malaga, with his team keeping a clean sheet.

As many as 259 would follow without Atletico conceding a single goal, with more than half of these duels being disputed on home soil.

Atleti's defensive solidity turned the team into a defensive wall which clinch every trophy available in Spain, including LaLiga Santander, Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de Espana.

The only thing Simeone's side have missed out on has been the Champions League, with Atletico reaching two finals under the Argentine coach but losing both to fierce rivals Real Madrid.

If anything, though, Atletico have won the respect of the whole continent throughout these 499 games where Simeone has been in charge.

Wednesday's game against Getafe at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano will be Simeone's 500 match in charge of the club.

As many as nine years, 499 games and seven trophies have already passed since that January afternoon in Malaga.
