Werner: The striker who is affected by noise

Playing in silence has become a normality of football for just over a year now due to the coronavirus, with certain players and teams having either benefitted or been disadvantaged from the lack of fans.

Tuesday's Champions League semi-final encounter between Real Madrid and Chelsea, under normal circumstances, should have seen a party atmosphere at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, but instead you will be able to hear a pin drop at the Alfredo Di Stefano .

Chelsea striker Timo Werner, who joined the club for 53 million euros last summer, has admitted that the silence is something that helps him on the football pitch.

The German international made headlines four years ago when his then team, RB Leipzig, were playing against Besiktas at the Vodafone Park.

The noise and atmosphere was so electric that Werner had to ask for earplugs on the half hour mark after covering his ears several times to escape the crowd, and later asked to be substituted.

"I had never seen such an atmosphere in my life, I couldn't concentrate on the game. I asked for some earplugs, but that didn't help either," explained Werner following his side's 2-0 loss to Besiktas.

Medical examinations

Various tests were carried out to determine the exact origin of the problem for weeks afterwards.

It was thought that what happened could have had something to do with a neck or back problem caused by excessive travel prior to the game.

The process caused him to miss two of Germany's qualifying games before the World Cup in Russia in 2018.

After some time off, Werner returned to the field without any problems and upon his return played in a packed Wembley in front of 80,000 supporters.

Without an audience on Tuesday, Werner and his pace will be one of the biggest threats for Real Madrid, as Los Blancos try to avoid conceding an away goal.
