Atletico have never been knocked out of the UCL after losing first leg by a goal

Even though the Atletico Madrid dressing room will have been a somber place on Tuesday night, Diego Simeone's men have reason to be cheerful.

Manchester City, however, will know the Spanish side are a dangerous wounded animal with one particular omen in their favour.

Atletico trail 1-0 going into the Champions League quarter-final second leg but have never lost a tie in the competition when suffering a defeat of that margin.

Back in 2015, Atletico went down in the away leg against Bayer Leverkusen courtesy of a Hakan Çalhanoğlu strike.

They then won the return by the same scoreline before taking the game to penalties and edging out the Bundesliga outfit 3-2.

The following season, Simeone's men repeated the trick, this time against Barcelona.

Luis Suarez scored twice for the Catalan side and Fernando Torres ensured the visitors returned to Madrid trailing by just the solitary goal.

In the return, Antoine Griezmann bagged a brace to send Atletico through in dramatic fashion. His 88th minute penalty proved decisive.

Simeone will know that another escape is a tall order against the might of Pep Guardiola's City.

Kevin de Bruyne has put the Premier League side in control of the tie and they will be desperate to avenge last season's final defeat by Chelsea.

Reflecting on De Bruyne's composed finish, manager Guardiola said: 'He is in the best moment of the season right now.

'He is sharp, quick and positive. His influence in our game is massive. He scored an exceptional goal from the combination with Phil.'
