Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani has told club officials he wants to leave the club this summer to join Boca Juniors, according to reports.

Cavani joined Old Trafford on a free transfer from PSG at the start of the campaign, and while he endured a slow start to his career in Manchester, the Uruguayan has improved and become one of the key members of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

The veteran forward has scored three goals in his last three games and the club are keen to extend his deal into next season, but the player himself has made his intentions clear after holding talks with officials, reports Argentinian outlet Depo.

Cavani told the club he wants to return to South America to be closer to his family, the report adds, saying he is set to turn down a number of Brazilian teams chasing his signature in order to join Boca.

Earlier this month, Solskjaer hailed Cavani for his positive influence around their Carrington training ground and said he was keeping an 'open dialogue' with the 34-year-old regarding his future at the club.

‘I’ve kept in touch with Edi of course,’ said the United manager. ‘We keep an open dialogue and he’s still unsure what he wants to do next season, which I find fine.

‘It's not been easy year either for him or the rest of the world, this season, so he still wants time to make his mind up.

‘I’m very sure we will get the good version of Edinson for the rest of the season. He knows this is the business end of season, where we fight for the Europa League trophy and we can see the end line in the league.

‘He’s been so positive in and around the place, he's been great to have. He's been working hard now to get fit and we’ve got him. Now hopefully we can keep him fit for the next six or seven weeks.’

Cavani has netted ten times in all competitions for United this season - with eight of those coming in the Premier League from 11 starts.

His goalscoring stats across his career make for impressive reading. He has scored a total of 363 goals from 617 games to make him one of the most fearsome strikers in recent years.

Solskjaer will still hope to count on Cavani as they seek to wrap up second place in the table and win the Europa League. They face Roma in the semi-finals next week.
