Steven Gerrard has been touted to one day takeover as Liverpool boss and former Reds team-mate Dirk Kuyt as thrown his hat in the ring to become the Anfield legend's assistant manager.
Gerrard is flourishing as a manager, guiding Rangers to their 55th league title this season, in so doing ending Celtic's nine-year domination in Scotland.
The Englishman's title triumph has intensified speculation linking the former Liverpool captain with the Anfield hotseat. Gerrard's contract with the Gers expires in June 2024, as does the contract of Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.
Kuyt, who has spent time on the training ground with Gerrard in Scotland, believes his former team-mate would do a 'great job' with his old club.
'I feel that his leadership qualities are going to take him very far as a manager,' Kuyt told The Mirror. 'I think it would be great if Steven Gerrard went on to manage Liverpool. He's Liverpool through and through and spent his entire playing career at Anfield.
'I have always got on very well with him, and we are still in contact from time to time. Steven has said some great things about me in the last couple of years, we have a special bond. He does not have to speak about me, but he still does.
'It has made me proud of our bond and it was great to go over to see him work with his team in Scotland.'
Kuyt has made his intentions clear that he would like to be part of Gerrard's journey with Liverpool.
The Dutchman became a cult hero with the Anfield masses during his six-year spell in Merseyside, and is setting his sights on beginning his own managerial career.
'I have a desire to be a manager soon and I am looking at options,' he added. 'But there are exceptions for choosing a path as an assistant manager and being alongside Stevie would be one of them.
'If he wanted me to be his assistant, I'd like that a lot. In principle, I see myself going on to work as a head coach, but, like I say, there are always exceptions.
'The most beautiful moment I can see is when Steven gets the job and can call himself officially the manager of Liverpool.
'And he'd do a great job. As he's done at Rangers, he will have a process, doing things gradually, step by step.'
The 40-year-old left Liverpool in 2012, moving to Turkish giants Fenerbahce. Kuyt hung up his boots in 2018, ending a 20-year career in which he scored 282 goals in 787 games.
Kuyt has coaching experience at Dutch side Quick Boys, where he was assistant manager, while he enjoyed a two-year stint as manager of Feyenoord's Under 19 side.
