Man Utd title winner claims it would be 'great' if Liverpool denied PL title

Former Manchester United defender Rafael has admitted it would be "great" for the Old Trafford side if Liverpool were denied the Premier League title by the season being declared void.

The Reds are a record 25 points clear at the summit and need to win only two of their remaining nine games to clinch the championship for the first time since 1990.

It would move their total on to 19 titles, just one behind United who haven't won the crown in seven years.

Premier League football has been suspended since March 13 due to the coronavirus outbreak, although clubs have committed to resuming the campaign when it is safe to do so.

But Rafael, who spent seven years at United and now plays for Lyon, would rather that didn't happen.

Asked by the official Manchester United website for the highlight of his Old Trafford career he responded: "I always say that when you get to 18, and when you pass Liverpool!

"Everybody's talking about 'stop the competition', no? They don't get to 20!

"It will be hard for them (if the league is cancelled), great for us! But that (winning the 19th title in 2011) was my best moment.”

FA chairman Greg Clarke has admitted there remains a possibility leagues may not be able to be finished in England.

Although UEFA president Aleksandr Ceferin has said he "can't see a way" where Liverpool aren't declared champions.
